Physical testing of tourniquets

The tourniquet is a strong, a reliable and a quick-to-use device for application after dangerous injuries and stop bleeding. Quick using is provided by self-applying with one hand and built in latch mechanism to prevent the premature release.

Import and production of different types of tourniquets are rapidly growing in Ukraine now.

Global standards for regarding physical testing of tourniquets have not been developed therefore the question how to define of their quality is actual and vital.

In respond to numerous producers and volunteers requests,

SE "UKRMETRTESTSTANDART" developed and implemented its own test method for defining physical properties of: MVV 30/80-2022 «Test procedure for estimation tourniquet`s working characteristics».

According to this testing procedure, UkrTEST Testing Service estimates the following characteristics:

• geometric dimensions of the tourniquet in the range (up to 1000mm);

• compression pressure of the tourniquet (up to 450 mm Hg);

• drop in compression pressure when applying the tourniquet for 2 hours (under normal conditions and after exposure to high and low temperatures, water and diesel fuel);

• breaking force of the tourniquet that was applied.

Tests are performed on ten units of tourniquets during a working week.
